I sipped my coffee as I watched Benny leave, trying to break down where, exactly, my life had gotten out of control. I was a great rider. I was a good mother. I had a job that would pay my bills if I was willing to move someplace where there were people who wanted to learn my highly niched industry. Before I divorced my husband, I’d been really successful. My ex-husband and I had owned a farm, many nice warmbloods, and had a waiting list. I’d had real, achievable Olympic dreams. I went to competitions across the country and was nationally ranked. I hadn’t gone to Europe yet, but I’d had plans.

Then I got divorced.

Could I blame it on Blake?

We’d had to sell the farm. And most of the horses, including my overly talented grand prix horse. The new trainer had taken him to Chicago this year and was now the one nationally ranked. On my horse. All because Blake had a traveling eye and loose control of his lower anatomy. But the truth was, even after we split, I’d been okay. Five of my absentee owners had wanted me to keep working and showing their horses. Those five paid for my condo outside of San Francisco and my essentials. No, I was going to have to face that it wasn’t Blake.

It’d been me. I’d done this. I’d chosen to move out here, where three of my clients promptly dropped me, despite my optimistic thought that they were absentee owners. They shouldn’t care where I trained. Wrong. They’d cared a lot. My bad.

Even then, I was doing okay after the move. Until the leg. And then Bon, the first quality warmblood I’d added to my barn since the move, died. I hadn’t lost any business, but I needed to get another horse in full training to be able to really be solid. Not to mention the criminal aspects of all my unwanted, addictive new hobby. Turned out that solving crime was… well, dangerous. And had a lot of guns. I mean, I knew the news talked about how many people had guns in the USA, but I’d never seen it for myself until recently. Guns and horses were a bad combo. Now I was starting to feel like everyone had one.

Really, I was blaming the leg. Yep. The leg. That was when everything went completely out of control.

I downed the last of my coffee as if it were a shot and stood up, gathering my things together as my phone buzzed.

Missy: Estimated time of arrival?

Me: Ten minutes?

Missy: Okay, cool.

Missy: Katie’s here.

Me: As in Hen’s daughter? Why is she at the barn?

Missy: She was crying at my door when I was trying to leave. So I brought her with me. Did you know that Twice could snuggle?

Me: What?

There was no way she just said what I thought she said. Even though it was typed. Maybe it was an autocorrect typo?

Missy: You need to see this.

Me: On my way.

Hopefully before my mare killed anyone.
